B1が評価される場面 英国の市民権や無期限の在留資格(永住権)で要求されるレベルであり、熟練労働者ビザの一般的な基準でもあります。
B1でできること

学習時間の数値は、語学学校が一般的に公表している目安の学習時間(ゼロからの累計)です。これらは教室での平均を示すものであり、成果を約束するものではありません。
B1がこのレベルである理由
B1は、CEFRの名称の由来となっている閾値(Threshold)であり、英語が「勉強する科目」から「使う言語」へと変わるポイントです。また、文法が単なる描写から、立場や状況を示すものへと移行する段階でもあります。仮定や丁寧さを表す条件法、他人の発言を繰り返すための話法、重要なことを前に持ってくるための受動態、そして他の言葉では表現できない意味を伝える法助動詞の体系などを学びます。
法助動詞は、B1における真の課題です。英語には接続法がほとんどないため、可能性、義務、許可、後悔、推量といった役割のすべてを、形を変えない十数個の小さな単語が担っています。He must be tired は義務ではなく推量です。You should have called はアドバイスではなく、過去に対する不満です。これらのどれも他の言語と1対1で対応するものではなく、実際の会話の至る所に登場します。
B1はまた、教室の外で最も重要視されるレベルでもあります。イギリスが定住や市民権の要件として求めるレベルであり、雇用主が英語を履歴書の一行ではなく実務スキルとして扱い始めるレベルであり、そしてネイティブスピーカー向けに書かれたものを最後まで読み切ることができるようになるポイントでもあります。この最後の点は状況を一変させます。B1以降は、読書を続ける限り、言語が自然に身についていくようになるのです。

B1を確実にクリアする方法
抜粋ではなく、テキスト全体を読む
B1レベルでは十分な文法力が身についているため、ネックになるのは理解力ではなくスタミナです。長い文章を最後まで読み切ることで、英語が段落をまたいでどのように議論を組み立てているかを学ぶことができます。これはまさに B2 でテストされることであり、どんな問題集でも訓練できないことです。
法助動詞を語彙として扱う
must、might、should を母語の対訳表に当てはめようとしないでください。きれいに対応するわけではありません。名詞を学んだときのように、それぞれが使われる状況から学んでください。
毎週何かを書く
100語で十分です。ライティングは、自分がどの構文を実際に使いこなせているかを確認する場です。スピーキングのように、言葉が出るまで言い換えて時制をごまかすことは、ライティングではできないからです。
レジスター(使用域・言葉の格式)を意識し始める
obtain に対する get、commence に対する start のように、英語には同じ概念に対して、平易なゲルマン語系の単語とフォーマルなラテン語系の単語が存在します。この選択を誤ると、文法的には正しい学習者の英語が堅苦しく聞こえたり、時には失礼に聞こえたりする原因になります。
